Penis Implants
There are a number of
reasons that men may find themselves considering penile implants.
Conditions such as: genetic deformities, diseases, and injuries can all
lead to difficulties in achieving and maintaining erections.
Under normal
conditions, when the penis is stimulated either manually, or
orally, a rush of blood enters the penis and as a result, the penis
experiences: a ‘stiffening’, and ‘lengthening’ of the penis. The
hardened penis, now fully-engorged with blood, rises and protrudes from
the body and this condition is what the term “erection” refers to.
One form of penile implant involves the ‘surgical’ placing of
plastic bars within the shaft of the penis. This type of penile
implant may be necessary to correct such conditions as a “curvature” of
the penis. An abnormal ‘curving’ of the penis, often causes
erectile dysfunction in men and can even cause men to experience less of
the pleasurable sensations of sex. This condition can be as a result of
genetic deformities, damage caused by diseases, and from injuries in
which the penis is severely bent. This form of penile implant results in
a “permanent” erection of the penis and therefore, may not appeal to all
men.
The “pump” is am alternate penile implant available to help men with
erectile dysfunctions. In this surgical procedure, an ‘inflatable’
prosthesis is implanted within the penis. Attached to this prosthesis is
a small device, (hidden in the scrotal sack) that is used to “pump” air
into the prosthesis to achieve an erection. This form of penile implant
allows men to have an erection for sexual intercourse, after which the
air is expelled so that the penis returns to a flaccid state. This type
of implant is preferable when medical conditions make it possible
because it closely ‘simulates’ the natural functioning of the penis.
Those who opt for penile implants will have the procedure performed by a
surgeon who is a “urology specialist” and the surgery will take place in
a hospital. A 3 to 5 day hospital stay is usually required to monitor
the patients’ recovery from surgery. Patients will also have to undergo
a period of recovery that could take up to four weeks to reach. It is
important to follow the instructions that the doctor has outlined for
recovery. Failing to follow these instructions could result in severe
consequences for the patient, including dangerous complications and even
the complete failure of the procedure.
Penis implants are a surgical procedure and all surgeries carry
some risk. There is always a possibility of infections, rejection by the
body, prolonged recovery time and less-than desired results from the
surgery. You should discuss the risks and benefits, as well as the
expected outcome of any surgery with your doctor before agreeing to any
surgical procedure. You and your doctor may even decide to try some
non-surgical alternatives that may solve your erectile problems first,
before deciding that surgery is the only option available to effectively
help you in restoring your desired erectile functioning.
